Poly-B Replacement & Repiping · Victoria, BC

Poly-B Replacement & Repiping in Victoria, BC

Poly-B, a grey plastic supply pipe, went into many BC homes built from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. Many insurers now ask about it, and some won't cover a home that still has it. Older homes may have galvanized steel or ageing copper instead.

What Poly-B looks like

Grey, flexible plastic pipe, often with grey plastic or copper crimp fittings, and printing along the pipe that includes PB2110. You'll usually see it near the hot water tank, under sinks or in an unfinished basement.

Why people replace it

Poly-B can become brittle, and fittings are a common failure point, especially with age and heat. Leaks can be sudden. Insurers' concerns over that risk are often what push owners to replace it.

Galvanized and copper

Galvanized steel pipe in older houses rusts from the inside, which narrows it and causes low pressure and brown water. Copper lasts longer, but older copper can develop pinhole leaks. A plumber can tell you what you have and how it's holding up.

What repiping involves

The plumber plans a route for new PEX or copper lines, replaces the pipe in sections, connects each fixture and patches the openings. Most homes keep water for part of each day during the job, and many are finished in a few days.

Planning the job

Ask for the pipe type, how many wall and ceiling openings to expect, whether patching is included, and the permit. Paperwork showing the replacement helps with insurance renewals and resale.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to replace all the Poly-B at once?
Not always, but many insurers want it all gone. Ask your insurer what they require before getting quotes.
Will repiping wreck my walls?
It means some openings in drywall, but plumbers plan routes to keep them few and small, often through closets, basements and attics.
