Sidney at a glance
Sidney is a town of 12,318 people (2021) at the north end of the Saanich Peninsula, on just over 5 square kilometres. It's beside Victoria International Airport, about 6 km from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal, and is the only Canadian stop on the Washington State Ferries system.
What that means for your plumbing
Sidney has one of the oldest populations in the region, with more than a third of residents over 65 in recent counts, and many condos east of Highway 17. Accessible bathrooms, grab bars, comfort-height toilets and walk-in showers are common requests; see fixtures and renovations.
Condo plumbing
In a condo, the strata usually looks after common pipes and the owner looks after fixtures and lines inside the unit. A leak can cross that line quickly. Know where your unit's shut-off is, and replace old washing machine and dishwasher hoses before they burst.
Named for a surveyor
Sidney takes its name from nearby Sidney Island, which Captain George Henry Richards named in 1859 after Frederick W. Sidney, a fellow officer in the Royal Navy's survey branch. The town faces the island-dotted Haro Strait and has a large boating and marine industry, from marinas to boatbuilders. Homes and businesses near the waterfront deal with salt air on outdoor fixtures and metal piping. For leaks in walls and ceilings, which in condos often start in the unit above, see leak detection.
