Central Saanich at a glance

Central Saanich had 17,385 people at the 2021 census on about 41 square kilometres of the Saanich Peninsula. It is the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people and includes Brentwood Bay, Saanichton, Island View and Keating.

The district began as farmland, and many hobby farms, working farms and vineyards remain. Farms and outbuildings

Hose bibs, frost-free hydrants and water lines to barns and greenhouses are easy to forget until a cold snap splits them. Drain and shut off lines to outbuildings in fall, and insulate any that must stay on.

Gardens and a potato ban

The district's best-known attraction is the Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay, with Gowlland Tod Provincial Park and Island View Beach close by. Farming history shows up in odd places: since 1982, potatoes grown east of West Saanich Road have been banned from export to the United States because of the golden nematode. Large lots and farm properties mean long drain lines to septic fields, which need regular pumping and a drain field kept free of vehicles and trees.
