Hiring a Plumber in BC: Certification, Gas Work and Permits
A few quick questions before work starts protect your home and your insurance. Here's what to ask a plumber in Greater Victoria.

Ask whether the plumber holds a Red Seal or a BC certificate of qualification in plumbing, or is a registered apprentice working under one.
Gas work is different
In BC, gas work must be done by a certified gasfitter working for a gas contractor licensed by Technical Safety BC. Gasfitters have needed Skilled Trades Certification since December 1, 2023. That includes gas hot water tanks, gas lines and appliance connections.
Permits
New plumbing, hot water tank replacements, sewer laterals and secondary suites usually need permits from your municipality, and gas work needs a gas permit. The contractor should arrange them.
Insurance and WorkSafeBC
Ask for proof of liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage. If a worker is hurt on your property or something is damaged, you want their coverage to respond.
Get it in writing
Ask for a written quote with the scope, materials, permits, timeline and warranty. Be cautious of large cash deposits.

Questions worth asking
Who will do the work, and are they certified or apprenticed? Who pulls the permits and meets the inspector? What warranty covers labour and parts? How are surprises, like rot behind a wall or a corroded drain found mid-job, priced and approved before work continues? A plumber who answers clearly is usually a good sign.
Red flags
A price far below other quotes, pressure to decide on the spot, no business name or contact details on the paperwork, or a suggestion to skip the permit to save money.
