Drain Cleaning in Victoria, BC
A slow bathroom sink is usually hair close to the drain. Water coming up a basement floor drain when the washer empties, or every fixture draining slowly at once, points to a blockage further down the line.

Kitchen sinks
Cooking fat goes down liquid and sets solid in the pipe, catching food scraps and coffee grounds as it goes. Wipe greasy pans with paper towel before washing, scrape plates into the compost bin and run cold water with the disposal so any fat stays solid enough to move along.
Bathroom drains
Hair, soap scum and toothpaste build up in sink and tub drains over months. A drain screen catches most of it. Avoid chemical drain cleaners; they rarely clear a full blockage and can damage older pipes, and they make the job hazardous for whoever opens the drain next.
Main line blockages
When toilets gurgle, the basement floor drain backs up, or several fixtures slow down together, the main drain or the sewer lateral is likely blocked. In established neighbourhoods tree roots are the usual cause; in newer ones, it's more often wipes, grease or construction debris.
Camera inspections
Once a main line is cleared, a camera run down the pipe shows why it blocked: roots, a sag, a cracked joint or a collapsed section. That tells you whether regular cleaning is enough or whether part of the line needs replacing. See sewer lateral repair.
Floor drains and traps
Basement floor drains have a water trap that blocks sewer gas. If one hasn't had water down it in months, the trap can dry out and let smells in. Pour a bucket of water down it a few times a year.
When to get help
If a plunger doesn't clear it, the blockage keeps coming back, or water appears somewhere else when you drain a fixture, send a request and a plumber will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions
- Are flushable wipes OK?
- No. They don't break down like toilet paper and are one of the most common causes of lateral blockages. Put them in the garbage.
- How often should a sewer line be cleaned?
- There's no set schedule. Homes with big trees near the line or a history of root blockages may need a cleaning every year or two; a camera check tells you.
